Order Code: 128-4
Techophilaea cyanocrocus
The RHS Award of Garden Merit
The fabled Chilean crocus – thought to have been extinct in the native habitats, but identified in 2001 in a field not far from Santiago alongside various spiny shrubs. Best grown in pots in well-drained, gritty compost, ideally in an alpine house. They grow best in cool conditions, but dislike long frozen spells when in leaf. The reward in March is electric! One or two flowers are produced per stem, of intense vivid gentian blue with a white throat. The flowers are 2 inches (5cm) across when fully open. Few bulbs exhibit such deep colours. They need a dry dormancy after flowering.
Planting instructions
Best in an alpine house or bulb frame in pots. Grow dryish and cool, not frozen in good gritty compost planted 2-3" )5-8cm) deep. March flowering 5" (12cm) tall. They should be protected from snails and slugs.
